The carpal tunnel is a passageway in your wrist through which the median nerve, blood vessels and tendons transit. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a compression neuropathy which involves pressure placed on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel.

Carpal tunnel syndrome typically presents with pins and needles in your thumb, index and middle fingers. You might also notice a clumsiness and weakness of your hand, with occasional referral of pain into your wrist, elbow and sometimes even shoulder. Often people report numbness and night pain, which is relieved by shaking of their hands.
