Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)
Experience Relief at Central City Chiropractic
The thoracic outlet is a passageway near your shoulder and collar bone (clavicle) through which nerves and blood vessels supplying your arms pass. It can be associated with pain in your neck, chest and arms, as well as tingling into your fingers.
There are many structures which can contribute to the presentation of thoracic outlet syndrome, and symptoms will vary depending on the cause, as well as the type of compression present. Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) can be arterial, venous or neurogenic, depending on what structures are being compressed.
Arterial TOS can cause pain, numbness and cold intolerance, while venous TOS has been associated with deep chest, shoulder and arm pain as well as a feeling of heaviness and swelling. Neurogenic TOS can cause pain, numbness, tingling or weakness from your neck and chest down into your hands. Tight muscles, an elevated first rib and the normal variant of cervical ribs are just some of the causes of thoracic outlet syndrome.
OUR APPROACH TO CARE
Treatment will be determined by the cause of the TOS but may include dry needling, muscle stretching, ischemic compression and adjusting. Our chiropractors at Central City Chiropractic are well trained in the examination and treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome and will be able to tailor a management plan accordingly.
