A stiff neck is one of the most common conditions treated by chiropractors around the world. At some point in their lives, almost everyone experiences neck stiffness, sometimes associated with painful or weak shoulders, arms or upper back. Typically this is from repetitive use, an accident, wear and tear, bad posture or stress, which can lead to tension in structures around the neck including muscles, joints, ligaments, nerves and discs.
Identifying the cause and providing the appropriate treatment is necessary to prevent further damage to those areas.
Neck Pain and Posture
In today’s environment, we often spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer, which commonly results in pain and stiffness in the neck, upper back and shoulders.
Try tucking the chin by moving the head back just a little bit. This will ease the tension in the neck muscles behind the head. You will also see your chest move forward and your shoulder blades back. Just like that, your posture will have improved tremendously. Of course, it is hard to maintain this kind of posture, especially if your job consists of sitting in front of the computer all day. These simple stretches can help:
Tuck your chin in by moving your head back a little bit like previously, and then push down on your head while trying to keep your chin tucked. Hold for five deep breaths. This will stretch the upper neck muscles.
Next stretch, move your head to the side, you can use your hand if you want. Hold for 5 deep breaths, repeat on the other side. This will stretch the side of your neck.
Finally, move your head down and to the side, again you can use your hand to help. Hold for 5 deep breaths and repeat on the other side. This will stretch the muscles going behind your ear to the shoulder blade.
The Role Chiropractic Plays
Wear and tear that we associate with getting older, means the body gets weaker and degeneration in the bones and joints occurs. The associated stiffness is treatable with chiropractic and although degeneration cannot be reversed, increased mobility and quality of life is still possible. It is best not to ignore stiffness and pain in the neck or anywhere else, as it could lead to chronic problems later on.
